Promotional video

Here is a promotional video including one of our favourite songs, May the Soft Light. Thanks to Soulhaven Creative Productions for creating the video and to Te Omanga Hospice and Te Hopai Rest Home And Hospital for their spoken contributions.

Video Tapestry

We started the Video Tapestry project in March 2020 when for a time we couldn’t rehearse together or visit any of the care facilities where we sing for the residents. The project was overseen by our then Musical Director, Carol Shortis. Carol and singers worked together to create individual recordings. These were then edited by Pam Hughes into the tapestries you see below. Whakaahuru normally sings in small groups of four to seven singers so this was a different experience, but we are very pleased with the results. The combined virtual choir will allow us to share our music with an even wider audience.

Give Me Birds at the Dawning is an original song written by Betsy Binstock, taught to Whakaahuru Singers by Peter Amidon (Hallowell Singers, USA) and arranged by Carol Shortis.
May the Soft Light is a setting by Carol Shortis of Anne Powell’s poem A Prayer of Blessing, from Firesong.
Famba Naye is a folk song from Southern Africa which came to Whakaahuru from Julian Raphael and has been further arranged by Carol Shortis.

The three Video Tapestry videos were initiated by our Musical Director, Carol Shortis, as part of an Arts Continuity Project grant from Creative New Zealand. The videos were produced with pleasure by Pam Hughes and directed by Carol Shortis. Performances © The Whakaahuru Singers Incorporated 2020
